Professor Kathy Sykes Joins At-Bristol as Board Director

At-Bristol, a leading science centre in the UK, has announced the appointment of Professor Kathy Sykes as a member on its board. Professor Sykes will serve as a director on the board, boosting the science centre’s 15-strong board membership.
Honoured recently by the Royal Society in the prestigious 'The Kohn award' for excellence in engaging the public with science, Professor Sykes will be actively involved in providing strategic advise towards the management of At-Bristol.

Having spent five years helping to create Explore, I care passionately about At-Bristol, and about what it contributes to this city, and country. It’s great to have the chance to help shape its future, and make sure it stays a real leader.” Says Professor Kathy Sykes.

Her expertise in the science communication field will prove to be valuable in helping to bring At-Bristol to its next level, where it becomes the hub for science centres in the UK and Internationally as it continues to make science accessible to all.” says Goery Delacote, Chief Executive, At-Bristol.
Professor Sykes used to head the Science team for Explore-At-Bristol beginning from 2002 and was in charge of creating the science content for the award-winning hands-on science centre.
Presently, Professor Sykes holds the Collier Chair in Public Engagement in Science and Engineering at the University of Bristol, working closely with enabling researchers from across the University to become more involved in conversations with the public.
She is a member of the Council for Science and Technology (CST), the UK government's top-level advisory body on science and technology policy issues. In addition, Professor Sykes chairs the Strategy Group and Panel of 'Sciencewise', a DTI programme that aims to increase and improve public dialogue on science and technology across Government Departments and Agencies.
Professor Sykes is also actively involved with the Wellcome Trust, the EPSRC and the Royal Society participating as one of their strategic panels in public engagement in science. She's a Trustee for the National Museum of Science and Industry (which includes the Science Museum).
Professor Sykes is recently awarded the 'Outstanding Women of Achievement 2006' by UK Resource Centre for Women.
At-Bristol has also appointed Roger Bull and Councillor Mark Bradshaw on its board. Mr. Bull is a partner of Burges Salmon LLP specialising in employment law, advising a wide range of public, private and voluntary sector organisations. Councillor Bradshaw is currently a member of the Physical Environment and Children's Services Scrutiny Commissions.
Other luminaries on At-Bristol’s board include Adam Hart-Davis, Councillor Simon Cook and Chris Curling.

evidence, Rough Science and Ever Wondered about Food. She has also co-directed and created the Cheltenham Festival of Science and Famelab, which, with the Science Festival, Channel 4, the Daily Telegraph, RCUK, NESTA and Pfizer, talent spots and trains new personalities in science communication.>
2. Dr. Goéry Delacôte is a renowned French scientist, science educator and public servant who joined San Francisco’s Exploratorium as Executive Director in February of 1991. He is also Professor of Physics at the University of Paris, currently retired. Dr. Delacôte holds a Ph.D. in solid state Physics from the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and has been involved in science and science education since the outset of his career.
