What on Earth are You Doing on World Space Week?
At-Bristol celebrates World Space Week with new space activities

4 October 2006 - There’s a good reason to be ‘spaced-out’ this month!

Join At-Bristol science centre from 4 - 20 October to celebrate World Space Week, the largest annual public space event on Earth.

To celebrate this special occasion, At-Bristol has organised an inspiring and engaging week-long event for the public as well as for KS3 students on space science and astronomy.

The public will get the opportunity to hunt meteorites and engage in plenty of exciting experiments and cheeky challenges that will allow them to investigate the Solar System, and beyond! At-Bristol’s popular Meet-the-Expert series is also set to delight with professional and amateur astronomers, who will little-by-little unravel the mysteries of the Universe with fascinating facts and tales! For example, meet the urban space man, Jerry Stone, to listen to his wacky tale about the day they launched the woodpecker!

As part of the celebration, KS3 students are also invited to be involved in intriguing experiments that allow them to explore the ages of stars within our galaxy. They will also learn all about light and the electromagnetic spectrum by observing the starry night sky.

World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology and their contribution to the betterment of the human conditions. It’s celebrated from October 4-10 annually and the date was declared by The United Nations General Assembly in 1999 mainly to commemorate the launch of

October 4, 1957 - Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration

October 10, 1967 - The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies

All activities held in At-Bristol are funded by Particles Physics and Astronomy Research Council.
