A Wellcome £1.4 Million Awarded to Explore-At-Bristol

Explore-At-Bristol is delighted to announce it has been awarded a grant of £1.4 million from the Wellcome Trust.

The grant will fund the redevelopment of the science centre’s popular Your Amazing Brain exhibition. Called All About Us, it will take visitors on an incredible journey through the whole human body looking at how our brain and body adapt to the world they are in. Packed full of hands-on phenomena, models, recreations and interactives, All About Us, will offer a fully immersive experience to visitors of any age.

This significant sum awarded by one of the UK’s largest grant givers devoted to improving our collective understanding of the way science has developed, is a vote of confidence for Explore-At-Bristol’s vital contribution to making science accessible to the widest possible audience.

Goéry Delacôte, Chief Executive of Explore-At-Bristol says, ‘We are very grateful to the Wellcome Trust for this substantial sum of money and its on-going support. We pride ourselves on offering our visitors the very best and this grant will allow us to create the most exciting exhibition Explore has had to date.

He continues, ‘This grant from the Wellcome Trust will fund one of our most ambitious refurbishments of an exhibition space in the eight years since opening. It is only with recognition from philanthropic funders like the Wellcome Trust, that we are able to embark on such forward thinking projects that enable us to make science accessible to the widest possible audiences and inspire a future generation of teachers, scientists and enthusiastic students.’

Since Explore opened in 2000, its exhibitions team has continually monitored the existing Your Amazing Brain exhibition, learning from its strengths and weaknesses and this knowledge, along with consultation with a raft of experts including Bristol University’s Professor Kathy Sykes and Dr Alice Roberts and Professor Sally Duensing of King’s College London, shaped the concept of All About Us and its cutting edge content.

The team plans to make some of the new exhibits in-house, outsource others and redevelop the most successful elements of the current exhibition.

Clare Matterson, Director of Medicine, Society and History at the Wellcome Trust said, ‘In less than ten years, Explore-At-Bristol has established itself as an important and ambitious science centre. The Wellcome Trust is pleased to be supporting the redevelopment of one of the centre’s most popular exhibitions, creating a fresh and inspiring new environment for visitors to learn about the human body.’

The first phase of All About Us is due to open to the public in spring 2009 with the final phase of work completed for Explore’s 10th Anniversary of opening in June 2010.
