SWEEP
Sustainable Waste
Exhibition and Education Programme

The SWEEP learning programme was an innovative
project that aimed to engage individuals in key issues relating to
waste management and sustainability.
|

|
By establishing such issues within the context of broader aspects
of biodiversity and sustainability, and by centring the whole
within the exciting and stimulating At-Bristol learning
environment, we aimed to raise awareness and increase understanding
of the principles of sustainable waste management and effect
change in people's attitudes and behaviour. SWEEP encompassed a
range of events and activities for schools and
families/informal groups.
SWEEP for schools
The SWEEP learning programme supported the National Curriculum in
Science, Citizenship, Geography and Design and Technology through a
variety of workshops, events and activities. These included
-
What a load of rubbish
hands-on workshop for KS2
-
Waste energy
workshop for KS3
-
Rot and recycling
special theme days (KS2/3 versions available)
-
Climate change special theme day (KS3 only)
-
Programming that supported regional, national and
international events and initiatives, such as Bristol Festival of
Nature, National Science Week and World Environment Day
SWEEP content and digital activities also supported the innovative
Wireless Wildwalk: Digi-trail and on-line activities are available on the At-Bristol website [Box
it, bucket, bin it!].
In addition, the programme developed a range of fun, inquiry-based
hands-on activities that encouraged students to explore themes and
issues surrounding waste management and sustainability. Through links
to everyday home-life examples and also by examining broader local,
national and world issues including biodiversity, the activities were
designed to encourage investigation and self-led discovery.
Also, within Wildwalk’s Live Science zone, At-Bristol’s innovative
News and views and Have your say stations provided continually updated
content to reflect the latest news and developments relating to
environmental issues. These provided opportunities to investigate news
stories further, find out about the opinions of other At-Bristol
visitors, and enabled students to comment and vote on the issues of the
day.
For teachers
SWEEP activities supported Teacher Preview evenings and the programme offered Professional Development
opportunities (CPD) through the Science Learning Centre South West.
