At-Bristol’s ‘womb’ goes for a refurb!
Fri 3 September 2010
At-Bristol’s ‘walk-in womb’ is having its first major maintenance in the 10 years it’s been in the venue during the refresh happening next week (6-10 September) when the venue, with exception of the shop and café, will be closed to visitors.
The ‘womb’, which so far has had over 400,000 ‘babies’, is one of the science centre’s most popular exhibits as it allows the visitor to experience what it’s actually like inside a womb from the sounds you can hear, the mother’s voice and just how much movement there is as the floor moves. You are taken on a journey of one woman’s pregnancy hearing her as she finds out she’s expecting, right up until she gives ‘birth’.
Bronwen Bird, Exhibition Manager for At-Bristol, said: “With having so many ‘babies’ it was time to give the walk-in womb a little bit of TLC! It will form part of our new exhibition All About Us that opens in February next year as we couldn’t lose such a popular exhibit and one that shows the journey of pregnancy so well.”
At-Bristol is having its annual refresh 6-10 September as it’s a quiet time for the venue, allowing for essential maintenance work to be carried out - 185,000 visitors a year can put a bit of a strain on things! It’s also the perfect opportunity for a lot of work to be done for the new All About Us exhibition so there’s minimal disruption for visitors leading up to the opening. The new £1.5million exhibition will be the largest in the 10 years At-Bristol has been open and as the internal Exhibitions team make most of the exhibits in-house, this is the perfect time to do work like knocking down walls, putting up new areas and laying new flooring.
